Can the Swans stifle Chelsea’s Champions pursuit?

After dominating wins during 2013/14/15 seasons Chelsea have seen Swansea become somewhat of a bogey team in the last season and a half, failing to win the previous three encounters. Back in September the two played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Liberty Stadium, with a late Diego Costa strike stealing a point for the travelling Blues. Plenty of goals have come between these sides, especially from Chelsea who have scored 14 against the Swans in the last six games. No doubt Conte will want more of the same today.

Chelsea oozed class last weekend as the progressed to the quarter final of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Only the back line was rested as Antonio Conte took no prisoners with a strong starting line up including all first team regular attackers. 1/4 (with bet365Bet Here!) for the home win today hardly looks like the most enthralling  of bets but there won’t be many up and down the country who haven’t included Chelsea in the home banker accumulator.

Chelsea now have two players in double figures for the season, Diego Costa (15) & Eden Hazard (10). The rest of the team have been pitching in lately though, Alonso, Luiz and Pedro all hitting the back of the net during the last six games. At home Chelsea attack on the left side 37% (compared with 32% right side) of the time so I’d be backing Alonso at 16/1 (with PaddypowerBet Here!) or Eden Hazard at 9/2 (with bet365Bet Here!) to score first.

Team news and rather concerning was Thibaut Courtois pulling out of a television interview at the weekend after contracting an illness and his availability remains in doubt. David Luiz, Nemanja Matic and Marcos Alonso were among the players to be given a rest last weekend and they will all be recalled here. Incidentally Nemanja Matic remains top scorer on the card collection count and he can be backed at 23/10 (with BetVictorBet Here!) to receive another.

What a great month it’s been for Swans fans who have seen their team climb out of the bottom three and sitting four points clear of the drop zone, thanks to wins Liverpool, Southampton and Leicester. Paul Clements is now at the helm with some calibre behind him, he’s the ex assistant manager of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich so you’d expect improvement which has duly come.

It’s hard to say what’s changed as goals are still going in both ends but a little belief you can win goes a long way. With a good goal scoring record at Stamford Bridge (6 goals:6 games) I certainly would highlight the rather large odds being offered around the Swans players to score first, in particular Llorente at 12/1 (with BoylesportsBet Here!) and Routledge at 22/1 (with BoylesportsBet Here!).

One man stands out though, he takes all free kicks and penalties, orchestrates the attacks, is the leading Swan goal scorer this season and not to mention captain. Can we guess? Its Gylfi Sigurdsson of course and he can be backed at 14/1 (with PaddypowerBet Here!) to score first or 9/2 (with BetfredBet Here!) to score anytime – Unbelievable value!

Swansea had the weekend off and will hopefully be well rested for the trip to London, although they didn't manage to recover any of their injured quartet: Montero, Dyer, Britton and Sung-Yeung. This means Luciano Narsingh could finally makes his full debut for the team, with fellow newboy Tom Carrol keeping his place in centre midfield.

SUMMING UP!

Swansea are deservedly receiving applause for their solidarity and attacking prowess under Clement this month whilst showing they can match the big boys with a solid account at Man City. For me the bookies have gone a little light handed on the odds of the upset, I had Swansea at 3/1 for the draw and 8/1 for the win. Chelsea do look unflappable in West London at the moment though and you don’t feel a loss is on the cards. The underdog option looks an uncertain one this time around.
