Champions League Last 16 1st Leg: Arsenal Vs Bayern Munich

Tuesday 19th Feb 2013 – Kick-Off 19:45

These are sad times to be an Arsenal fan, and probably even sadder times to be Arsène Wenger. It used to be an unthinkable prospect that the most successful manager in Arsenal’s history could ever be fearful for his job. Yet the man who has come to represent the Gunners over the past 15 years plus (he may as well change his name to Arsènal Wenger) is now sixth favourite to leave his post before the end of the season, the 16/1 with BetVictor shortening even as you read this.

The Frenchman’s only salvation may be an unlikely Champions League run at the expense of German giants Bayern Munich; Arsenal are 40/1 outsiders to win the trophy with Stan James and Bet365. Currently 15 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, Munich have looked imperious this season, and with Pep Guardiola taking over the reins at the Allianz at the end of the season, the players will be looking to give him a strong platform to build on. You can find Bayern at much better odds than the Gunners to win the prestigious title; they are 6/1 across many bookmakers including Paddy Power and Betfred.

Match Result

Reflecting their respective odds for the trophy, even with home advantage Arsenal are outsiders for this one. Even though we will see a much-changed side from the embarrassing defeat to Blackburn Rovers, with Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott, and Lukas Podolski all expected to start, Paddy Power and Coral have the Germans as firm favourites at 11/10. Arsenal remain a team worthy of springing a surprise however, and if you fancy them, they can be found at 11/4 with Bet365 and Betfred. Alternatively, if you can see this one ending as a stalemate, then Stan James and SkyBet have the draw for 13/5, with odds drifting.

Bayern have an impressive squad, with Super Mario Bros Gómez and Mandžukić keeping each other on their toes in the striking positions, while Javi Martínez and Bastian Schweinsteiger provide the cutting edge in the middle of midfield. These four, combined with the lethal pace of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry on the wings mean we should see some splendid attacking in this game; Coral have Munich to win 3-1 at 20/1, something that does not look too far-fetched taking into account Arsenal’s suspect back line.

Goals

With such a wealth of attacking talent on display, it would be a shock if this game did not produce some goals. BetVictor are offering 5/6 on there being over 2.5 goals, which are very generous odds for a likely outcome.

Mario Gómez also looks like a decent bet for Anytime Goalscorer; the clinical German international was rested for Bayern’s weekend win against Wolfsburg, and will be a handful all game for the Arsenal backline. He is one of the favourites to score, for obvious reasons, but can be found with Ladbrokes for 6/4.

Lukas Podolski will be hoping he can put in a performance against Bayern that will make them regret selling him in 2009. He may have blown hot and cold this season for Wenger’s side, but you can guarantee he will want to score against his old team. The best odds for the Pod to score anytime are with Coral and William Hill, at 10/3.

 Wildcards

As with our earlier tip of Mario Gómez to score, coupled with the fact that a Bayern win looks likely, a Score/Win Double bet with Gómez to score and Bayern to win looks very tempting, and also rewarding. Paddy Power will offer you 13/5 on this outcome, which looks like it could prove to be a steal.

Additionally, a Bayern win not to nil is also an offer that looks like it could prove to be a winner. Arsenal have goals in them if they can unlock their attacking potential, but Bayern should prove too strong for the North London outfit. Coral will give you 16/5 on Bayern to win not to nil.
