We've got an all English Champions League Final - Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur! It's been eleven years since two English teams have contested the Champions League final (that time Man Utd beat Chelsea on penalties) but on the 1st June, the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid will host a potential epic final! Both Liverpool and Tottenham will have cause to be optimistic and both sides will fancy their chances of lifting the Champions League trophy! But what should you be putting your money on and what are the best bets for the Champions League Final? Let us begin.....
How did both teams get to the Final?
After the first leg at the Semi Final stage of this competition both English sides will have felt their European dreams were over for another year. Tottenham were outplayed by an impressive Ajax side and trailed one nil going into the away leg, where as Liverpool were three nil down to Barcelona and at least 20/1 (or more) with most bookies to advance to the final!
Both teams managed to overturn a three goal deficit and progress into the biggest European club football final over two nights of football which will go down in Champions League history! Liverpool completely dominated Barcelona at Anfield and left Messi and co completely shell shocked. Spurs will be thankful for a super human effort from Brazilian forward, Lucas Moura who bagged a quality second half hat-trick to take the north Londoners through to their first Champions League final. Moura is 300/1 with Bet Victor to bag a hat-trick in the final!
I think it's not unfair to say Tottenham have been lucky in this season's Champions League. Virtually out of the competition after the first few group stage games, a controversial handball decision in the city game, tight VAR call in the city game, and a last gasp winner against Ajax are just some of the perilous incidents in the Tottenham Champions League run this season. Spurs have only managed to progress earlier rounds against Ajax and Man City on away goals! Tottenham were 100/1 to win the Champions League at one stage in the group stages. That luck has to run out at some point and against Liverpool I think Tottenham will need all the luck they can get to have any chance!
Liverpool have had a fantastic season, but they have already lost four games in this seasons Champions League, albeit in away matches; three times in the group and against Barcelona. However Liverpool have seemed to click into gear over the last few weeks and despite missing out on the Premier League title, seem well focused to claim their 6th European Cup!
Champion League Final Team News
So there's big team news to come in the build up to the biggest football in Europe (and perhaps the World). We're still a few weeks away from the game so still a lot can happen with injury updates. Liverpool should have a fully fit squad to pick from the showpiece event.
Tottenham have a number of players who may or may not be in contention for the final. Dele Ali, Jan Vertonghen, Victor Wanyama, Harry Winks and Harry Kane. It's expected that Harry Kane will play some part, but that may be from the bench. If you fancy a bet on Harry Kane, Kane is 9/5 to score in the match with Coral!
You would assume Poch would look to play those players who are 100% fit, but you never know and the Spurs manager may have to roll the dice!
Whose going to Win the 2019 Champions League?
Liverpool! Ok, so perhaps some further background is need.....
If you look at the form guide, the head to head record and the team news it all points to a Liverpool win, but football doesn't always work out like that! But in this case I think the Liverpool momentum will be too strong for a Spurs side which despite getting to the final, are in a poor run of form with only 6 wins in their last 17 matches!
Liverpool last lost to Spurs in 2017, but that was in the days of no Virgil van Dijk and Alisson! Since then Andy Robertson has become an established left back for the Merseysiders and Trent Alexander-Arnold has become an assist king! It's difficult to read too much into past games, but it's clear Liverpool have a very strong record against Spurs for a long time.
If you look at the potential match ups, arguably Liverpool are stronger in every position across the pitch. The midfield battle will of course be key and Liverpool have three absolute workhorses in Wijnaldum, Henderson and Fabinho, who you would fancy to temper the likes of Sissoko, Eriksen, and Dier. How Sissoko is able to influence the game will have a huge bearing on the game as he is perhaps one of the few Spurs players who can compete with Liverpool physically.
Up front I think you'd fancy Salah, Mane and Firminio to get the better of slightly fragile Tottenham back line at times. Mane is finally getting the recognition he deserves and is a decent shot at 17/4 (Unibet) to score the first goal of the game. If Kane starts will he be sharp enough to get the better of VDV and co!? Is that a gamble Mauricio Pochettino is willing to take?
In a one off, all or nothing game I think we'll see bold attacking play as both teams don't tend to sit back and wait to nick a one nil win! I think both teams will score and odds at 4/5 (Coral) seem very generous to me and should be the banker bet!
Liverpool have the far more firepower and pace, especially with Mane and Salah, and will be better equipped to deal with an out and out attack fest! A high scoring Liverpool win, say 3-2, or 4-2 is a real possibility and that's the way I see it panning out! But Liverpool to win in 90 minutes seems a reasonable bet to play the superiority and most bookies are offering in excess of evens, best 21/10 with Betfred!
The Liverpool to win the Champions League odds are relatively skinny at 11/20 (Unibet), but it seems a banker bet to me!
