Welcome to Day 3 of Cheltenham Festival 2024! St Patrick’s Thursday!

Today’s feature race is The Stayers Hurdle. The market is led by Teahupoo from the Gordon Elliott yard although a very competitive betting heat is expected.

We may also be seeing the last of the legendary Paisley Park as takes his place in the race as a 12-year-old. Could he do it one last time?

Envoi Allen will also be looking to retain his crown in the Grade 1 Ryanair Chase.

Getting to the course

If you’re lucky enough to be heading to Cheltenham for the live races, please be aware of the following travel information.

Road Closure

In order to try and alleviate some of the antisocial problems reported from previous Festivals, the Evesham Road which links the racecourse to the town, will be shut southbound from 4pm to 8pm after racing, to allow a wider route for pedestrians exiting the track.

There will be temporary toilets and stewards marshalling the route.

Coming in from Birmingham New Street Station

Birmingham New Street station will be running a staged queuing system for trains to the Festival so as to avoid passenger congestion on the platform. Please allow plenty of time to allow for delays here. Be aware of rails strikes on Thursday.

Race Previews and Selections

13.30 Cheltenham: The Turners’ Novices Chase

The mid distance novices championship chase is one of just two races to have a British trained favourite.

greydawning_cheltenhamfestival2024_bestbets.jpg
Grey Dawning running for the Skeltons has been consistent all season but faces stiff competition from the Willie Mullins’s trained Facile Vega and Paul Nicholls’ Ginny’s Destiny.

The Nicholls team won this last year with Stage Star and they have a similar hope with Ginny’s Destiny. Our selection at 100/30 with William Hill.

14.10 Cheltenham: The Pertemps Handicap Hurdle

Massively competitive stayers handicap hurdle. A few household names involved including the classy chaser from the Nicky Henderson yard, Chantry House.

As featured in our Best Long Shots piece, we fancy Lord Snootie trained by Christian Williams to spring a surprise at 20/1 best odds with Bet365, Bet Victor, Betfred and Boylesports.

14.50 Cheltenham: The Ryanair Chase

The first of two big Grade One championship races on an action packed third day. Envoi Allen ridden by Rachel Blackmore will be hoping to retain their title from last year.

The horse is reported to be in excellent form but will face big opposition from the likes of Banbridge, Paddy Power Gold Cup winner Stage Star and Conflated.

15.30 Cheltenham, THE STAYERS HURDLE

The feature race of the day. Teahupoo trained by Gordon Elliott holds favouritism at 2/1 (bet365, William Hill, Bet Victor and Boylesports) but face stiff opposition from the Grade 1 Ascot Long Walk hurdle winner Crambo.

Noble Yeats, previous winners Flooring Porter and Sire Du Berlais also in the mix.

However, a lot of attention will no doubt focus on the enigmatic Paisley Park who as a 12-year-old, could be running in his last Stayers Hurdle.

16.10 Cheltenham, The Festival Plate Handicap

Another big field 2 mile 4 furlong handicap chase to round off the ITV live racing schedule. Some well-seasoned handicappers lining up here and this looks mighty competitive.

The JP McManus owned Crebilly leads the market at 7/2 best (bet365, William Hill, Bet Victor, Betfred and Boylesports) but we like the look of the Gordon Elliott trained Saint Felicien who has been running consistently in Ireland with this race very much in mind.

Gordon Elliott won this race previously on The Storyteller back in 2018. Saint Felicien is best odds 12/1 with Bet365, William Hill, Bet Victor, Betfred and Boylesports.
