Best Long Shot Bets For Cheltenham Festival 2020

The betting bonanza that is the The Cheltenham Festival can sometimes be a happy hunting ground for successful big outsider bets. The Festival has a multitude of big priced runners with decent enough form behind them to land the spoils. The trick is of course picking the right ones!

The handicaps is clearly a good place to start and we’ve selected a Gordon Elliott fancy expected to perform well in The County Hurdle on Friday Day 4 of The Festival.

However, we have also picked out two very well-known household names who we think have excellent price tags about them and have done nothing wrong all season, although they face stiff opposition in their respective races.

One of these is a seasoned campaigner from the Paul Nicholls yard who is always there or thereabouts and is a massive price for the very competitive Champion Chase on Wednesday.

POLITOLOGUE

It’s difficult to predict which Politologue will turn up on the day. The Paul Nicholls nine year old grey seems to run 1 good one in 2 but if he’s caught on a good day around Cheltenham on the 2 mile trip, he can run with the best at usually good odds.

This year’s Champion Chase on Day 3 of The Cheltenham Festival is no exception where he is a 25/1 shot (William Hill full ante post rules apply). Let’s not forget that he gave Altior a major scare in last year’s Champion Chase, keeping within 2 lengths of him going up The Cheltenham Hill.

He’s had two runs this season including a brilliant second to Defi Du Seuil in The Shloer Chase at Cheltenham last November. He’s got to improve substantially more to win but reproducing his best form this season is all that is needed to place.

BRISTOL DE MAI

This enigmatic grey trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies has really captured the public’s imagination in recent years with his flamboyant Betfair Chase wins at Haydock. However, he just doesn’t seem to cut it at other tracks and has been prone to the odd error in recent outings.

Nevertheless, his last run in The Cotswolds Chase at Cheltenham last January was a blinder and would have won, beating current Gold Cup favourite Santini, if he hadn’t seriously blundered at the third last.

He’s got a cracking price tag at 25/1 (Bet 365 NRNB & Best Odds Guaranteed, Betfair NRNB, Paddy Power NRNB, Unibet NRNB) for The Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup and the last day and wouldn’t not need to improve much to seriously figure.

SPIRIT OF THE GAMES

This Dan Skelton 8 year old has taken time to warm up this season but has produced 2 great runs over course and distance this season in similar types of race to the one he is chiefly entered for: The Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate Handicap Chase on St Patrick’s Thursday.

He is also entered for the Johnny Henderson on Day 4 but the Plate is his most likely destination. William Hill go 16/1 but full ante post rules apply. Otherwise 14/1 best and NRNB with Bet 365 (Best Odds Guaranteed), Bet Victor, Unibet, Coral and Betfred.

THATSY

Gordon Elliott is bringing an awesome team and especially so in the handicap department. One he singled out in a recent stable tour was Thatsy, who he believes has plenty of pace and would suit 2 miles.

Speaking to At The Races.com, Gordon Elliott said about Thatsy:

He’s a nice horse. He was beaten on his first start over hurdles, but he gave a blow and just got tired that day. He should be all the better for the run. I might well bring him back to two miles, as he jumps well and has plenty of pace. I wouldn’t be surprise if he progresses into a Graded horse over hurdles.”

He’s had two runs in decent handicaps and is definitely improving. Could be excellent value in The Randox Health County Hurdle on Day 4 (Friday 13th March) where he is generally a 25/1 shot (Betfair NRNB and 5 places paid, Coral NRNB).
