In all honesty, Cheltenham Festival 2023 looks to be a tricky year for identifying the best bankers of the meeting!
Either horses have dropped out, as in the case of Allaho for The Ryanair Chase or horses which were considered to be Cheltenham banker material last autumn, have not delivered. Hence, the Cheltenham betting markets look far more open than they did at Christmas.
We have delved deeply to identify three of the most viable horses which closest represent banker material to form a special Cheltenham Festival banker accumulator. We also assess the races to avoid and pinpoint the races which could be mistakenly interpreted as banker material options but are in fact fake bankers!

1 - Constitution Hill, The Champion Hurdle, Tuesday 14th March
The Nicky Henderson trained hurdling sensation of the season has sent everybody running for cover. Honeysuckle and Epatante both look set to seek refuge in The Mares Hurdle whilst numerous runners in The Champion Hurdle look doiubtful as a match between Constitution Hill and the Irish raider State Man is dominating the markets.
Who is the main danger to Constitution Hill? State Man is the obvious threat although the performances of the Nigel Twiston Davies trained I Like To Move It has caught the attention of many. However, Constitution Hill is in a league of his own and barring a fall, this is the Cheltenham banker of the meeting. 4/11 with William Hill.
2 - Gerri Colombe, The Brown Advisory Novices Chase, Wednesday 15th March
This horse has now established himself as the mid distance leading novice chaser and The Gold Cup is a firm distant target.
He really impressed in the Scilly Isles Novice Chase at Sandown recently and should take all the beating in the Brown Advisory with perhaps Sir Gerhard as the main danger. Definitive banker material and reportedly Gordon Elliot’s best hope for the week. 7/4 best with Bet365, William Hill, Betfred, Boylesports.
3 - Shishkin, The Ryanair Chase, Thursday 16th March
There is an enormous sense of redemption with regard to Shishkin’s participation at The Cheltenham Festival this year.
After bouncing back at Ascot after his Champion Chase and Tingle Creek woes, the Seven Barrows team have taken stock and despite Matt Chapman’s daft protestations, the conservative decision has been made and The Ryanair Chase is the 98% confirmed target.
And banker material he is as the current field is sure to be depleted as there are plenty in there with multiple targets and declarations.
Blue Lord could go for the Champion Chase, Conflated and Envoi Allen have serious Gold Cup aspirations.
Shishkin does not have to improve much from his Ascot run and should have the complete measure of any of the current rivals declared. Backed heavily in recent days down to 8/11 with Bet365 and Betfed.
Fake Bankers! The Races To Avoid!
The Arkle, Tuesday 14th March
This is a tough race to call and although Jonbon was proclaimed up and down the land as banker material last autumn, the meteoric rise of El Fabiolo has certainly put the breaks on that. Jonbon’s latest chaotic run at Warwick also adds doubt. A fascinating match but not a banker material race by any stretch of the imagination.
The Mares Hurdle, Tuesday 14th March
When Honeysuckle’s connections announced the defection to the Mares from the Champion Hurdle, many thought that this could be a penalty shot for the two times Champion Hurdler. It is anything but. Epatante will almost certainly be supplemented for this whilst last year’s winner Maries Rock and Brandy Love are all hugely dangerous rivals.
The Turners Novices Chase, Thursday 15th March
Mighty Potter has been excellent this season and should take all the beating but faces some tough rivals, if they turn up. El Fabiolo should go to the Arkle but Banbridge and especially Appreciate It are viable dangers to the favourite.
The Cheltenham Gold Cup, Friday 17th March
Galopin Des Champs is probably the most exciting horse in training bar Constitution Hill but The Gold Cup is the toughest race in the business and no horse can ever be considered banker material in this race such is the demand of stamina, jumping prowess and sheer luck.
Bravemansgame despite Paul Nicholl’s poor record in the race since 2009 is a great jumper and will surely exploit any errors whilst dour stayers Stattler and Noble Yeats will pounce if the Willie Mullins favourite fails to stay.
