Francois's Best Bets & Tips

1. Spain Half Time/Full Time vs Russia

Russia may have won their first two games at the World Cup, but I just haven't been impressed with them. The two wins for the hosts mask a poor team who simply don't have enough quality to get past a very classy Spanish team. Beating Saudi Arabia and Egypt isn't a big achievement in international football term and much stiffer tests will face them in the Luzhniki Stadiumon Sunday 1st July!

Spain have looked threatening without devastating and I reckon we'll see Spain get better. Spain have faced much tougher matches than Russia and I believe that will be reflected in the Moscow game.

Spain_Russia_Euro_2008.jpg

Last time Spain met Russia at a major tournament was in Euro 2008, when the Spaniards knocked up two wins against the Russians by a three goal margin.

Remember Russia's poor form before the World Cup? Why? Because they faced the likes of Brazil, France, Portugal and Mexico. Stanislav Cherchesov will go out on Sunday afternoon and Spain will march on. A good way to take advantage would be a bet on Spain win half time / full time against Russia.

2 . Uruguay: To Reach the Semi Final

I'm going to stick to my pre-tournament prediction on Uruguay. Uruguay have started slowly, but have such great defensive qualities it's always going to give them a chance. Yet to concede a goal and with arguably the best striking pair in Russia, La Celeste have more than a punchers chance! Uruguay have every chance of going all the way and claiming another World Cup.

The path to the Semi-Final of the World Cup won't be easy, with only one of France, Argentina, Portugal or Uruguay to make it through to the Semi-Final! It's certainly on paper the hardest section of the draw! But with Godin, Cavani and Suarez surely they will!

Cavani_Godin_Uruguay_World_Cup_2018.jpg

The 3-0 defeat of Russia in the final Group A match is a sign of things to come for Uruguay. Luis Suarez and co. have more in the locker and they will relish scrapping it out! Uruguay's odds to reach the Semi-Final have come in, but I still believe they represent decent value.

3 . Sweden vs Switzerland: 0-0 / Draw

Well Sweden vs Switzerland appears to have a 0-0 draw written all over it! Both teams like are well organised, like to defend and don't give much away. I can't see anything other than very, very tight game and lots of defensive play.

The 0-0 is priced relatively low, but I think that's completely justified. Sweden have notched up two clean sheets so far and although Switzerland haven't so far, this game is likely to have a different dynamic. Both teams know how to stifle a game and both lack more than a few genuinely creative players. The Swiss and Swedish sides have very much justified their progress, yet in this one they're likely to just cancel each other out in the pursuit of progress!

Switzerland_World_Cup.jpg

The draw, draw half time/full time, 0 - 0 correct score, and low goals all represent good ways to bet on this game. There's also danger betting like this can go against you, however I firmly believe the pressure of the occasion is likely to kill this game. Low goals, few chances and a potential penalty shoot anyone?

4 . England vs Colombia: England to win and Both Teams to Score!

England play Colombia on Tuesday evening (7pm) with great confidence and the knowledge that their path to the Semi-Final is very achievable. Apathy has turned to expectation and great exuberance. Colombia will post a tough challenge at the Otkrytiye Arena and having amassed 6 points in a tough group the South American's can't be dismissed too easily.

The odds suggest the bookmakers have England as slight favourites, 15/13 (Unibet) for the England win, 23/10 (Betfred) for the draw, and 31/10 (Betfair) for the Colombia win. England should be favourites and with reports James Rodriguez will be ruled out with injury, I think England should be firm favs!

Last time the sides met in the World Cup, was when Glenn Hoddle lead the England team in World Cup 1998, when England knocked up a 2-0 win. I think we'll see an exciting free flowing game and goals. I like the look of England win result and both teams to score. Colombia don't usually play out 0-0 and England certainly have the firepower to score!

5 . Spain to win the World Cup 2018

I'm going for Spain to take the big prize! In truth I haven't been amazed by any standout potential winning team at the tournament so far. The farcical Spain manager situation and the ageing legs might be two reasons from the doubters! I don't buy this; Spain have the best midfield talent in the tournament, a top striker in Diego Costa and arguably the world's best goalkeeper! Spain can get much, much better!

Spain_World_Cup_Win.jpg

If Spain can navigate a likely quarter final with Croatia I think they'll be very well placed to go and lift the trophy in Moscow. The team still has a lot of talent of previous World Cup winners, with a smattering of new talent who should be hungry for glory.

Spain have a 'nice' side of the draw and will expect to reach the final! Russia is a gimme for me and Croatian's should await in the 1/4 final. Spain would feel hard done, not to have amassed more points and more impressive results. Mistakes from De Gea cost Spain, but De Gea doesn't make those kind of mistakes too often. I believe Spain have had their wobble and will grow into the tournament.

Matt's Best Bets & Tips

1. France vs Argentina: Argentina to win and Messi to score

At times, the South American giants have played shambolically during this World Cup. Lacking cohesion in midfield and with their talisman leader, Lionel Messi, looking out of sorts by his standards, it’s practically a miracle that they’ve qualified for the Round of 16. It will surely rank as one of the greatest World Cup escapes. But qualified they have and the scare that they suffered and subsequent criticism from fans and the Argentinian press alike, could galvanise the likes of Messi, Di Maria and Mascherano to produce the kind of football that we know they’re capable of. The two goals Argentina bagged against Nigeria were of the highest quality.

messi_france_argentina.jpg

There’s plenty of reason to believe that a resurgent Argentinian team can get a result over France. The French qualified comfortably in an unspectacular fashion. But they are struggling for the goals and they may have to rely heavily on in form Olivier Giroud to provide them. A fascinating tie beckons and now that Messi has got off the mark and his team have this “get out of jail free” card, this could be the game where he finally shines in this World Cup. 9/2 boost bet with William Hill.

2. Croatia vs Denmark: 1-1 in 90 mins

Croatia should win this overall but I predict they will have to work for it. Denmark have been difficult to break down and Croatia will need Modric to produce another masterful performance in midfield. This should not be a high scoring game so a 1-1 draw looks very feasible with these two highly organised defences. Head to Unibet for the highest odds of 6/1.

3. Spain vs Russia: 2-0 in 90 mins

I’m predicting the final curtain on the Russian party. Despite the two wins over the mediocre Saudi Arabia and Egypt, the hosts suffered a harsh reality check against Uruguay and their opponents in the knock-out stage, Spain, will prove to be just as difficult to beat. Spain have stumbled through qualification but will surely bring their A game to this fixture and brush the Russians aside with a comfortable 2-0 victory. Head to Betfair or Unibet for best odds of 6/1

4. Brazil v Mexico: Mexico to lead at half time

Brazil are starting to purr and with Argentina out of sorts, Germany simply out and Spain spluttering, many feel that this World Cup is theirs to lose. However, Mexico have provided some moments of brilliance, notably despatching Germany to a 1-0 and at times playing some scintillating football. I fancy them to burst out of the stalls and give Brazil an early scare and establish a lead over them going into the break.  This can be seized at 6/1 at Betfair.

5. England v Colombia: Harry Kane to score and England to win

England should go into this tie with their confidence high and spirits refreshed and revitalised after the inconsequential last round game with Belgium. England often have very strong second round performances when they have experienced successful group stages. 2002 saw them thrash Denmark at this stage and they did the same to Paraguay in 86.

kane_england_colombia.jpg

I predict them to see off this Colombia team who will have to rely heavily on Falcao to provide the goods in front of goal. England can look to a number of resources for goal scoring opportunities based on performances so far. Kane will be itching to get back on the scoresheet after taking a break against Belgium and therefore a double on Kane to score and an England looks a sensible choice. 15/8 with Boylesports best at the moment.
