British Open 2015 betting preview – who shall come out on top at St Andrews?

So the British Open returns to the home of golf this year for the 29th time. With world number one Rory McIlroy out injured, breakout star Jordan Spieth is looking to secure his third major in a row and knock the Northern Irishman off the top spot in the world rankings. Spieth is best priced at 8/1 with Coral and Ladbrokes to continue on his majestic run of form, but howtobet4free will delve deep into the stat books to find the very best tips and tricks to golf betting, so we can all make the 144th Open a profitable one.

The British Open rarely features a terribly long course, and St Andrews is definitely a course where one mistake can ruin a whole round. Terrifyingly deep bunkers and chaotic coastal weather combine to make a savage test for even the finest of golfers. Thus, we often find that the good scramblers, bunker players and more experienced pros often do well at the British Open, where they may fall short at the big events in the United States. Lee Westwood (100/1 to win with William Hill, 11/1 at Top Englishman, 2/5 to make the cut) is often a safe bet in big championships, despite poor recent form, and fellow Englishman Ian Poulter (Top Englishman 12/1 with Unibet, Top 10 finish at 17/2 with Coral, 4/9 to make the cut with Bet365) may well prove valuable bets. If you fancy backing a legend to make the cut and play into the weekend, try Bernhard Langer at 6/4 or Sandy Lyle at 10/3, both with Bet365.

Now for many casual golf fans, the sport is about 1 man only. Tiger Woods has occasionally looked like rekindling some of his world beating form prior to the collapse of his personal reputation, but has since had trouble tweaking his swing and coming back from several joint injuries. However, Tiger is and always will be capable of pulling out a big performance when it matters, and can be found at a lofty 40/1 to win the Open with Paddypower. For a safer bet, he is 4/9 to make the cut with Skybet and 8/5 for a top 20 finish with BetFred.

Finally, with the amount of tight British Opens in recent memory, our final tip is a 3/1 shot at the whole tournament going to a play off, best priced with Betfair.
