Can the Europe Rookies make their mark in the 2016 Ryder Cup?

Finding the best deal for outright win!

The 2016 Ryder Cup begins at Hazeltine, Minnesota on Friday and despite Europe having dominated the event with 8 victories since 1995, the USA is very hot and determined favourites. This is mainly due to the fact that Europe captain Darren Clarke is fielding 6 Ryder Cup debutants and The Ryder Cup has never been won with 6 newcomers or more. Some sources are even quoting that this is The Ryder Cup that the “USA cannot afford to lose”. Not surprisingly, the leading firms are holding tight on the price on outright win for the USA with most asking for 8/13 and 4/7: clearly not a betting proposition considering Europe’s strong recent history but if you’re not deterred and don’t have an account with Coral yet, then look no further than the Stratford based firm who are offering a juicy 5/1 on a USA win for all new accounts! On the other hand, if you feel that Europe can continue the winning streak, all customers with Betfred will find best price 9/4 whilst new customers at Paddy Power can take advantage of a very enticing 10/1 for a Europe win. However, the bulk of the betting opportunity can be found away from the outright betting market by taking advantage of the myriad in choice of alternative Ryder Cup markets.

Rookie value?

Europe has traditionally been strong on the group match performances. However, the selection of 6 rookies in the mix adds a betting dilemma or two. How good are these rookies? Danny Willets of course is already a household name since winning The US Masters back in April and should certainly cope with the pressure. Chris Wood has had a solid season including a win in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in May whilst Matthew Fitzpatrick has been improving noticeably this season, most prominently in the US Masters where he finished a joint seventh but lacks experience of match play. Thomas Pieters has been in scintillating form lately hence his last minute wildcard selection. Therefore a good market to take advantage of may well be the best performance by a European rookie. Danny Willett currently leads this particularly tight betting heat and can be grabbed at best 3/1 with Stan James. However, as earlier mentioned, I believe Thomas Pieters is going to make his mark on this Ryder Cup and could be worth a decent punt at 5/1 best with Bet365 and Coral. Of the rest, Chris Wood can easily up his game and at 9/1 with BetVictor, he’s a worth a little speculation.

Correct score markets

There is an abundance of betting opportunities to predict the correct scores for each of the days. My initial feeling is that the USA may edge it on the first day as the European debutants find their feet and get accustomed to a course (Haezeltine) that the experienced American team will be familiar with. Therefore out of the scheduled 8 matches (four foursomes and four four ball matches), a USA 4.5-3.5 victory at 6/1 best with Paddy Power is worth a crack. The general forecast is for a tight first day; therefore an overall tie is a clear favourite at 5/1 with BetVictor, SkyBet and Stan James.

Consequently, after an explorative first day, the Europeans will have a clearer idea of how the greens are playing and might exude a little more confidence to take the second day by a small margin. A similar market to the USA victory is apparent here and 6/1 for Europe to win Day 2 by 4.5-3.5 is available at Boylesports and Stan James.  Still 5/1 for the draw with BetVictor and Stan James.

Best of the Stars and Stripes!

The highly experienced Phil Mickelson.jpg

The American team, in contrast to the European team, is packed with Ryder Cup experience and, more significantly, eye catching recent form. Dustin Johnson, the current world no.2, is clearly the form player having notched up the US Open in June and the BMW Championship in September. In the market for Top American in the tournament, he is best priced at 4/1 with Bet365, Boylesports and William Hill. The often outspoken and youthful Patrick Reed is participating in his second Ryder Cup and providing he keeps his cool, he could be the one to stand out again, as he proved to be the best American performer in the previous event in 2014. Patrick Reed is easy to bet at 6/1 with most firms. For those looking for wisdom and experience of the Ryder Cup rigours should look no further than Phil Mickelson who has participated in the Ryder Cup more times than any other American. He is best priced at Sporting Bet and Coral at 12/1.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy the 2016 Ryder Cup!
