The second leg of the Autumn Double takes place this Saturday as Newmarket hosts the long distance Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket. The race always attracts connections from the national hunt side of racing, and this year is no exception with champion jumps trainer Willie Mullins saddling the current race favourite Bunting.

Gordon Elliot and Alan King are also represented in this highly competitive handicap. We check out best Cesarewitch bets and top odds from our partner firms Bet365, William Hill, Betfred, Bet Victor and Boylesports.

Getting To Newmarket by free shuttle bus

A complimentary shuttle bus service on race days runs between Newmarket town centre (outside Unico Restaurant), Newmarket Train Station and the Racecourse (Rowley Mile and/or July Course).

The journey commences 2 hours before the first race and stops at the first race. The return journeys from the Racecourse commence around 45 minutes before the last race and continue for up to 2 hours. The bus will drop off at the train station and at the bus stop on The Avenue (just off the high street) near Rose & Mango Restaurant.

At the Racecourse, the shuttle bus service will drop off and collect outside the Grandstand and Paddock Entrance at The Rowley Mile and from the middle of the White car park, outside Premier Entrance 1 at the July Course.

The Top Players

Bunting

Willie Mullins has a fine record race having saddled three last of the seven winners. Bunting comes into this in fine form after a very encouraging run in a decent handicap at Leopardstown last month where he stayed on well over 1 mile 6 furlongs.

2 miles and 2 furlongs will not inconvenience him, and it looks his optimum trip. A worthy favourite at 6/1 with Bet365, Betfred, Bet Victor and Boylesports but this is merely linked to the horse being trained by Willie Mullins and the horse possibly lacks experience. Better value to be found elsewhere.

Reverend Hubert

This Charles Byrnes trained seven-year-old should put in a bold bit after his course and distance win last month in the Cesarewitch handicap trial, albeit it being a fairly weak race in comparison to this.

However, he is very well treated at the weights, and his form is also boosted by his good performance in this race last year. Best odds of 15/2 with William Hill.

East India Dock

The Triumph Hurdle third has had a highly successful season on the flat and comes into this on the back of a fine Chester Cup win and consistent performances over 2 miles extended distances.

He clearly enters each way calculations although his current handicap mark now looks a little vulnerable. Best odds of 9/1 with William Hill.

Alphonse Le Grande

Alphonse Le Grande has been well backed in recent days with odds tumbling from 10/1 to 6/1. He was the subject of a controversial 33/1 victory in this race last year which was initially taken from him by the stewards although reinstated after closer inspection of the race video.

However, his form has not been replicated this season. Nevertheless, punters have been latching onto his clear preference for this course and distance. 7/1 best with William Hill, Betfred, Bet Victor and Boylesports.

Best Outsider Bets

Manxman

Manxman, despite needing a little more rain to get his preferred give in the ground, looks excellent each way value at 16/1 with William Hill. He is of course remembered for being runner-up in last year’s event and although his form this season has been questionable, he bounced back with a good staying performance in a Goodwood handicap last time out in early September.

He also benefits from the 5ib weight allowance for apprentice jockey Jack Callan on board.

Surrey Belle

Another progressive sort could be the Adrian Keatley trained Surrey Belle who has been running consistently in the lower grade handicaps. However, he has lasted his races well and this step up in class and trip should not inconvenience him.

Looks to be good each way value at 22/1 with William Hill and Boylesports.

Verdict

A fairly open contest as always. Last year’s winner Alphonse Le Grande looks to be ticking all the boxes and makes a worthy short price. However, the value and lack of exposure surrounding Surrey Belle is too good to ignore and is our selection to land the Cesarewitch.

SELECTION: SURREY BELLE EACH WAY 22/1 with William Hill and Boylesports.
