Thundering Blue leads the charge for Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire meeting

Bookmakers have seen a significant amount of cash laid on The Cambridgeshire Handicap sponsored by Betfred in the last five days and it’s been pretty much all about one horse. Starting at around 12/1 before the weekend, the David Menusier trained Thundering Blue has been trimmed considerably in the market to a best price of around 8/1. We’ll take a look at this charge aiming to complete a four timer of victories along with some of the action on Friday and Saturday. The flat season may be drawing to a close, but there is still plenty of cracking races to get stuck into. And so to Thundering Blue. Is he worth latching onto??

THE BETFRED CAMBRIDGESHIRE HANDICAP (3:35pm NEWMARKET - SATURDAY 30.09.2017)

Having won three decent handicaps in style on the bounce, including a win at Newmarket, it’s of no surprise that punters have latched onto Thundering Blue in a big way. He’s versatile over any going and should enjoy a truly run race with a test of stamina, which he should get on Saturday. He looks to be ahead of the handicapper too which is possibly the main reason why he is the subject of such a gamble. My only concern would be the drop back in distance to 1 mile 1f but this shouldn’t inconvenience him too much. I’m going to jump on the bandwagon and take the 8/1 for a solid each way chance for 5 places although at the time of writing, only the race sponsors Betfred and bet365 are promising the extra place although at 7/1 for our strongly backed favourite.

For the each way value hunters, I quite like the look of Leader Writer who has been putting up some creditable performances for trainer Henry Spiller. He was particularly impressive in an Ascot handicap last time out, drawing clear to score by three lengths and looks like he should stay the extended one mile one furlong. He is best backed at 25/1 with Bet Victor.

THE ROSEMARY STAKES (2:25pm NEWMARKET - FRIDAY 29.09.2017)

This Grade 3 stamina test for fillies and mares look an enticing open affair. John Gosden has a decent hand to play in this one including Elas Ruby who has been consistent and versatile over any ground all season. She registered one win at Newbury and been in the frame for most of her starts. Frankie Dettori is a positive booking and is set to go well at 9/1 best with William Hill.

THE SHADWELL JOEL STAKES (2:25pm NEWMARKET - FRIDAY 29.09.2017)

Mustashry looks like the one to latch onto at a good price in this 1 mile graded event as he seeks a hat trick for the Michael Stoute yard. He’s won his last starts convincingly and should improve. Best priced at 9/2 with Betfred, Bet Victor and Paddy Power.

THE JUDDMONTE CHEVELEY PARK STAKES (2:20pm NEWMARKET - SATURDAY 30.09.2017)

Aidan O’Brien will always get a mention sooner or later and his best hope for the three day meeting appears to be in the fillies sprint event on the Saturday, The Cheveley Park Stakes. Clemmie won the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes, sponsored by bet365, over the course and distance back in July and the best price of 7/4 with William Hill looks like the nearest thing to a banker for the meeting.

THE JUDDMONTE MIDDLE PARK STAKES (2:55pm NEWMARKET - SATURDAY 30.09.2017)

The colts’ 6 furlong event looks far more open than the Cheveley with several vying for the favourite position. I’m marginally behind the Richard Fahey trained Sands Of Mali based on his impressive win in the Al Basti Equiworld Gimcrack Stakes at York a month ago, where he made all and kept on to score by a couple of lengths over Invincible Army. He should improve on that and is worth seizing the best price of 4/1 available with most firms.
