Dark Horses For Cheltenham Festival 2022

(2.5 minutes read)

The Cheltenham Festival races are often won by low profile, unexposed horses as trainers sometimes keep their cards to themselves regarding the well-being and current form of their horses.

With around 4 weeks to go until the start of Cheltenham Festival 2022, we’ve taken the opportunity to scan the current Cheltenham Festival 2022 betting lists to spot any likely dark horses that may have escaped the spotlight of the punters gaze and the pundit’s pen!

We’ll also check out the best available Cheltenham odds from our partner firms and point you towards some of the best Cheltenham Festival 2022 offers around!

Marie’s Rock

Having always been highly rated by Seven Barrows, this Nicky Henderson trained seven-year-old was unlucky in the recent Kempton Lanzarote hurdle but firmly entered the Mares Hurdle picture after a gutsy win at a Warwick mares novice hurdle event.

This race looks fairly open and further improvement is expected from the connections. 16/1 for the Mares Hurdle with bet365 but also holds an entry for The Coral Cup at 20/1 (bet365).

Threeunderthrufive

The Paul Nicholls yard have had a lean spell as of late although a re-emergence looks on the cards as Bravemansgame ran a winner under a big weight at Newbury last weekend.

The National Hunt Chase on Day 1 of The Festival sees the appearance of Threeunderthrufive who has whittled off three wins on the bounce at the 3-mile trip, including at one Cheltenham last November.

Probably has a bit to find with the likes of Stattler and Run Wild Fred but definitely open to further improvement.
14/1 with bet365.

Gerri Colombe

Has been winning quietly for in form trainer Gordon Elliot at Thurles and Down Royal this season in mid distance novice hurdle events.

He won going away in his latest start which suggests that plenty of improvement is within him. Entered for both the Ballymore (33/1, Boylesports) and Albert Bartlett Novice (13/2 Bet Victor) hurdle events at The Festival.

Envoi Allen

The ongoing drama of Shishkin and Energumene has changed the complexion of this year’s Champion Chase. It is still a very strong race and although the front two in the betting should take all the beating, current champion Put The Kettle On (22/1 bet365) and Chacun Pour Soi (5/1 William Hill) still represent viable dangers.

However, the dark horse in the pack could in fact be Envoi Allen at 20/1 with William Hill. The bookmakers’ reaction to his workmanlike defeat of Battleoverdoyen at Leopardstown by pushing out his odds on all his entries at The Cheltenham Festival was questionable and he now looks a value bet. Still has a lofty reputation to prove but should not be ruled out.

Torn And Frayed

This Nigel Twiston-Davies trained 8-year-old recently impressed with a superb win in a Cheltenham handicap. The 8ib rise at the weights should not deter anybody as this horse clearly relishes the Cheltenham hill. 14/1 looks great value with bet365.

Fiddlerontheroof

The Cheltenham Gold Cup looks far more open than appeared last October. All the leading fancies have some form of question mark against them which opens the door to the possibility of another outsider claiming the blue riband of steeple chasing.

The Colin Tizzard trained Fiddlerontheroof has only one run to his name this season and that was an absolute belter where he was narrowly beaten by the feather weighted Cloudy Glen in The Ladbrokes Trophy.

He is therefore one of the most unexposed horses in the Cheltenham Gold Cup field and with improvement he could be enticing value at 40/1 with bet365.

Tornado Flyer

Willie Mullins has an uncanny habit of winning major prizes with unfancied horses and no exception was spared with Tornado Flyer winning The King George impressively last December.

True, a few key players didn’t turn up on the day, but that win should not be underestimated. He’s clearly a battler considering he nearly tipped up at the first in that race, so those qualities will certainly aid him on the Gold Cup demands.

It’s a question mark whether he will stay, and the Ryanair Chase might be a more viable option, but he remains a very unexposed horse in The Cheltenham Gold Cup at 14/1 (bet365).
