The first leg of the Autumn Double takes place this Saturday as Newmarket stages the Bet365 Cambridgeshire Handicap. It is set to be a pulsating betting heat with many vying for favouritism including a strong hand from top trainer John Gosden who fields two of the first three in the betting as things stand.

Antepost betting

The market is currently under full antepost rules. Any bets taken now will be deemed as lost if the horse for whatever reason fails to declare for Saturday’s race.

Each Way Betting

Bet365, Betfred and Boylesports are currently offering six places for each way bets instead of the standard four places, whilst William Hill and Bet Victor are offering six places.

The Top Players

Treble Tee

Treble Tee is a deserved favourite after comfortably obliging in a decent Doncaster handicap over one mile ten days back. The extra furlong will suit, and he won over 7 furlongs as a two-year-old at Newmarket in October last year.

The Simon & Ed Crisford trained entry has been a revelation since wind surgery with consistent performances since. Best odds of 6/1 with William Hill.

Fifth Column

Arguably, Fifth Column is the top rated of the John Gosden runners. He ran well to win comfortably in a valuable handicap at York during the Ebor Meeting and he should build on that especially with things drying out in the next few days: he acts best on a decent surface

His course and distance victory back in July strengthens his claims and will certainly be in the mix at the business end of the race. The Gosdens have a good record in this race having saddled four winners since 2005. Best odds of 7/1 with Boylesports.

Westridge

Incredibly consistent four-year-old trained by John Gosden who has been an excellent servant all season. He has not been out of the first three in his last five outings including wins at Goodwood and Windsor over 1 mile 2 furlongs on good to firm ground.

He will get ideal conditions on Saturday and will relish the trip. However, the handicapper has developed a firm grip on him and looks vulnerable at his current mark. Best odds of 12/1 with William Hill.

Tribal Chief

This David Menuisier trained four-year-old has been found wanting in top company but has performed consistently in lower grade handicaps. He demonstrated significant improvement when beating race favourite Treble Tee in a Goodwood handicap and is actually one pound better off against that rival this time.

Should be there or thereabouts if he can improve further. Best odds of 12/1 with William Hill, Betfred, Bet Victor and Boylesports.

Best Outsider Bets

Despite carrying a hefty weight, Thunder Run trained by last year’s winner Karl Burke, comes into this after winning the valuable one mile and one furlong Clipper Handicap at York over good to firm. If he can replicate that form, he should be in the mix at 18/1 with William Hill and Bet Victor.

Indalo showed vast improvement to win a decent handicap at Southwell last month and looks a progressive type on a good mark: he carries attractive odds of 28/1 with William Hill.

Real Gain also looks an excellent value each way proposition. He has a course and distance victory on good to firm going back two years ago and is in decent form after an encouraging second behind Rhoscolyn in the Coral Golden Mile heritage handicap last month at Goodwood: he is sure to improve on that and looks excellent value at 14/1 with Bet365 and is our selection to land a first Bet365 Cambridgeshire for trainer Richard Hughes.

Recap

A tricky puzzle to solve as always. Treble Tee and Fifth Column are worthy favourites with favoured fast ground in their favour, whilst Tribal Chief could run a decent race against classy rivals after impressing in lower handicap grade races.

However, the best value could be with the Richard Hughes trained Real Gain who looks like he could build on a decent third in an extremely hot Goodwood handicap.

SELECTION

Real Gain 14/1 each way with Bet365.
