Harry Angel Heads The Cast For Saturday's Haydock Sprint Cup

As the flat season heads towards the twilight end of the calendar, we focus our eyes on one of the most valuable and highly rated sprints of the season, The 32Red Sprint Cup at Haydock this Saturday.

The market has an uneasy leader in the shape of Harry Angel due to the possibility of unfavoured testing ground. The day has a strong supporting card but it’s the big race we feast our eyes on first and as mentioned, the weather may have a big say on the destiny of the highly regarded favourite.

THE 32 RED SPRINT CUP, 16.10 Haydock, Saturday 9th September

Harry Angel has had a splendid season. In fact, the Clive Cox trained pacey three year old has not been out of the 1-2 in all of his six starts in his entire career. He’s bang on form after an excellent second behind Caravaggio at Royal Ascot and winning The July Cup at Newmarket.

However, there is widespread speculation over the ground which having softened up in recent days and with more rain predicted, is raising doubts over whether Harry Angel will perform to his best. True, his wins have come on fast ground but he did score at Newbury last year on softish going so I don’t think it will inconvenience him too much. His resilience and turn of foot is too good to ignore so I will stick with him at 9/4 best with William Hill and Betfred. His price has been fluctuating in recent days so keep an eye on it.

If Caravaggio, trained by Aidan O’Brien, is declared at the final stage, he has to be considered as the each way option despite the dip in form in recent outings. He is currently available at 16/1 with bet365 but under full anti post rules.

THE 32 RED MILE (SUPERIOR MILE), 13.50 HAYDOCK, SATURDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER

The Superior Mile event looks far wide open and is currently led in the market by the lightly raced 4 year old Morando, trained by Harry Bentley. He notched up three wins on the bounce last season and has run creditably this season, including a decent 4th in a Group 3 over in Leopardstown. He is best backed at 9/2 with Ladbrokes and Coral and has been the subject of some strong support in recent days. I quite like the look of the veteran campaigner Sovereign Debt who has been running consistently all season, notching up 3 wins in decent company. He’s been niggled at in the market but still available at 8/1 with Betfred and William Hill.

THE 32RED CASINO HANDICAP, 16.10 HAYDOCK, SATURDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER

This tight handicap could just be the tonic for the Richard Kingscote trained 3 year old, Time To Study and the timing of the race coinciding with the start of the school year should keep the horse name followers happy too. I really liked the way he ran at Royal Ascot in the Queen’s Vase where he was unlucky in running to finish fifth. With the exception of the Ascot race, he hasn’t been out of the frame in his entire career of 6 races and looks set to run a decent race at 8/1 best with William Hill.

THE 32RED BE FRIENDLY HANDICAP, 15.00 HAYDOCK, SATURDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER

This handicap dash looks highly competitive with several entries vying for favouritism. However, I quite fancy the Robert Cowell trained Evergate who has a very consistent record in these types of races, especially this season where he has hardly been out of the frame. He’s fairly treated at the weights and should put in a decent run as an each way proposition at 12/1 with most firms. Confessional also for the notebook.

THE 32RED.COM HANDICAP, 16.45, SATURDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER

The last race of the day is another competitive affair although the race on paper looks dominated by the John Gosden trained 3 year old, Great Sound. He’s lightly raced having only run three times in his career and these have been solid performances, including last time out where he ran clear of the field in a Newbury handicap. He will no doubt improve on this and this is reflected in his odds which are 3/1 at best. If you’re looking for value however, Percy’s Word has looked useful in two starts this season and may put in a decent run at best odds 16/1 with bet365.
