International Friendly: England vs Rep. Ireland

Everyone’s favourite adulterer and speedy full-back Ashley Cole won’t be playing away for a change tomorrow as he captains England at Wembley stadium in their friendly fixture vs Ireland. While the World Cup qualifying campaign is still underway and could see England left in an awkward two legged playoff tie, England face their neighbours from across the Irish sea tomorrow and then next year’s hosts –Brazil on Sunday.

The last time England played Ireland in 1995 the game was called off due to violence off the pitch at Lansdowne road in Dublin, hopefully after eight years the game at Wembley will fulfil it’s title of a ‘friendly’ match, after all I’m pretty sure half of everyone you meet has an Irish relative somewhere down the line! Either way the match will be hotly contested and I don’t think that England will have it easy. Having said that I can’t see England losing it either.

Scores on the Doors

In the past Robbie Keane might have provided a bit of a problem for the England defence, but nowadays he spends his time playing for LA Galaxy, which is essentially football’s equivalent of Sunrise Senior-Living for once-good footballers. England on the other hand have in-form Dan Sturridge looking at a start in a central role and could leave the Irish defence sitting on an ice-pack the morning after. I’m tipping a solid 3-0 victory for England. If you reckon that’s a decent shout you should place your bets with William Hill who are offering a cheeky 11/1.

Dan the Man or Fast-layne Wayne?

When I say fast-layne I am suggesting that Rooney could be a decent first scorer bet, not describing him when he visits the grannies in Sunrise Senior-living… Rooney is as per usual, the bookies favourite to find the back of the net first. If you fancy having a bang on Wazza you want to be betting with Paddy Power who have the best odds of Rooney scoring first with 9/2.

I’m tipping Dan Sturridge to score first however following his impressive run towards the end of the season for Liverpool. Following his move from the left at Chelsea to the centre at Merseyside inducing a shock run of form I can see the England striker netting first if he is given the nod by Roy. The best odds on Sturridge are with BetVictor who have Dan the man at 6/1 to score first, alternatively if you prefer, BetVictor again have the best odds with 9/5 for him to score anytime.

Quick off the Mark?

England seem to have a habit of showing up at the start of games and then just… sort of… trail off… and.. Wait, what? Where was I? Oh yeah sorry, England are quick off the mark and then tend to stagnate a little. Whilst I can’t see them stagnating against Ireland as the pressure is off, I can see them scoring early. England leading after 15 minutes is 7/2 with Ladbrokes and could be worth a flutter.

You might want to couple that with a bet on over 1.5 goals in the first half with William Hill who are giving 2/1. Two early goals against the boys in green given their ramshackle and injury-hit team is feasible, but then so is a classic England banana-skin-moment where they get caught with their trousers down as Lescott loses a slow-motion race vs Robbie Keane. Over 1.5 goals in the first half looks promising at 2/1.
