Can Spurs upset the St Mary’s Christmas cheer?

Southampton

(Form check:WLWDW)

Southampton would of enjoyed their Christmas festivities this year after their comfortable 3-1 win in the south coast derby against Bournemouth. This meant that on Christmas day they were sat in seventh position, six points behind Manchester United in sixth but considering they’ve played eight to nine games more than others, due to the Europa league campaign, it’s been a really solid start from the Saint’s team. Fancy Southampton to outgun Manchester United for a top six position? Best Priced 8/1 with Betfair SportsbookBet Here!)

With the loss of Charlie Austin to injury many Southampton fans were worried after such a low scoring campaign (only 17 goals so far!), so it was quite a surprise the Saints managed three goals away from home against Bournemouth. Today’s match against Tottenham Hotspur will be much more of a test but in Southampton’s favour they do like scoring against Spurs with eight goals in the last six games between the two. Jay Rodriguez heads the first goal scorer betting market for Southampton @ 6/1 (with William HillBet Here!) but I rather like the odds of Boufal @ 8/1 (with PaddyPowerBet Here!) who loves to have a shot from midfield (14 shots in his last 4 games).

Southampton have a small but select squad which up to this point has escaped with few long term injuries, apart from Charlie Austin that is. Several fringe players are out (Jake Hesketh & Jeremy Pied) but this shouldn’t affect Claude Puel’s plans. The bigger debate will be whether Jose Fonte will play after contract issues with the club and how long the Saints can keep hold of Virgil Van Dijk. A market has been formed for the January transfer window; quite simply he won’t be leaving until summer 2017 so the 1/2 (with SkyBetBet Here!) for him to stay this coming month looks far too big!

Tottenham Hotspur

(Form check: WWLWW)

Tottenham Hotspur walk into this game after a lacklustre home display against Burnley where it seemed to take them an age to click into top gear, eventually coming in 2-1 winners. 2/5 favourites on that occasion, they had many a punter nervous who had a Super Sunday accumulator rolling on the result. Tottenham actually haven’t got the best away record this season, 2W’s, 4D’s & 2L’s which goes someway to justifying why the bookies are offering 17/10 (with Betfair SportsbookBet Here!) for the Spurs win.

Only one team, Chelsea, have conceded less goals than Spurs this season, and having defensive tactical nous is one thing Mauricio Pochettino is renowned for. This is largely thanks to Hugo Lloris who has had a really solid campaign between the sticks, but consistency at the back has also played a part, Walker, Rose and Vertonghen all playing over 1000 minutes to far this season. Today Tottenham are 2/1 (with CoralBet Here!) to keep a clean sheet, considering they’ve kept eight this season I’m shocked by the price!!

Hugo Lloris.jpg

Toby Alderweireld, Erik Lamela and Vincent Jansson all remain sidelined so Pochettino will most likely keep the starting eleven he played last time out. This saw Christian Eriksen and Delli Alli support Harry Kane in attack, not the quickest but all three have superb technical ability. If you fancy a strong Tottenham performance why not look at the Man of the Match market available at Paddy Power (Bet Here!) for these three players: 9/1, 7/1 & 7/1 (Bet Here!) available respectively**.

SUMMING UP!

A hard game for me as I’m a Southampton fan!! Being realistic the hope is that we don’t lose this game, which I think we are more than capable of. A draw would suit both sides quite well but I’m still expecting goals, aiming for a 1-1 or 2-2 draw. No doubt it will be a great game for the neutral as both sides love to play the ball on the floor, Let the Saints go marching in!!
