The Final Day of the Season

D-Day is upon us...

The last day is never usually straightforward in The Premier League. Last minute goals can win titles, cost teams’ European football, and relegate the unlucky few. So in a generous move, online bookies will refund all losing first goal scorer, last goal scorer, correct score and scorecasts if there is a goal in the last 5 minutes of your chosen game.

Manchester

Man City vs QPR

W: 1/7 D: 7/1 W: 14/1

With home  tie advantage for Man City on the final day of the season, only needing to match Man United’s result, you would expect City to cross the line with a flourish. However their opposition are perhaps the one breed of team they’d rather avoid on the final day, the team trying to avoid relegation.
QPR have the same task as Man City, in matching Bolton’s result at Stoke to avoid elimination for the top flight. With both teams needing goals, expect a free flowing see-saw encounter, as it was back in November. City came away with a 3-2 victory that time around, and the same score line this time will get you odds of 25/1, a £10 stake returns £260
City are 1/9 to hold their nerve and collect the title, whereas QPR are 1/3 to avoid relegation and 2/1 not to beat the drop. As this is the last day of the season these bets obviously be combined, so if you think Man City will beat QPR and send them down (or they will stay up regardless, the odds are the same) a £10 stake on each will return you £41. Just keep an eye on the Bolton score!

Sunderland vs Man United
W:6/1 D: 7/2 W: 4/9

United can only do one thing at Sunderland and that’s better Man City’s result, which may prove to be impossible. You will get odds of 11/2 on United sneaking in and taking the title off their neighbours at the last moment, certainly worth a tenner to offset any potential losses through a QPR win at the Etihad. The reverse fixture was a drab 1-0 victory for United on the day Alex Ferguson celebrated his 25th year in charge of the club, and the same score will net you £75 from a stake of £10 at 13/2.

Relegation

Stoke vs Bolton
W:6/4 D: 12/5 W: 7/4

If QPR have the toughest fixture of all to play on the final day, Bolton have the fixture they perhaps wanted to avoid almost as much. Stoke have become fierce rivals of Bolton since the FA Cup semi-final drubbing they endured at their hands last year. Bolton gained revenge by the same 5-0 score line in the reverse fixture of this year (225/1 for the same score line in this fixture) so it is probably fair to say Stoke won’t be looking to do them any favours this time around. Bolton are 2/1 to avoid the drop and 1/3 to go down

The Champions League Shootout

Two places available (if Chelsea fail to win the Champions League!) three teams vying for the glory. Since the Premier League secured a 4th berth for Champions League football, there has never before been three teams been in contention for 3rd place on the final day, and never before has the team in 3rd place before kick-off time been in danger of dropping down to 5th and missing out on the Champions league all together.

Tottenham vs Fulham
W: 2/5 D: 7/2 W:7/1

Spurs have perhaps the fixture of choice, with home advantage against Fulham. Harry Redknapp’s side have recently rediscovered their form, coincidently since the England manager’s post was filled, and now look poised to pounce on any slip ups from Arsenal. In Fulham they also appear to be facing the perfect opposition, with a record of 35 wins out of 37 at White Hart Lane. For Champions League betting, Spurs are 1/10 to finish in the top 4 and 5/1 to finish outside the top 4

West Brom vs Arsenal
W:15/4 D: 3/1 W: 4/6
Arsenal know they only have to win to guarantee 3rd spot, but there will be no margin for error with Spurs and Newcastle sitting right behind them. They face a West Brom side who will surely be looking to end Roy Hodgson’s time at the club on a high, and current home form serves them well. They have lost just 1 of the last 12 home games this season, and Ben Foster has also kept 4 clean sheets in the last 6 games.
Arsenal are 1/33 to finish inside the top 4 and 9/1 to finish outside

Everton vs Newcastle
W: 5/4 D: 12/5 W: 21/10
Although Newcastle have probably the toughest fixture, they also have the least to lose on the day, with 5th guaranteed the only way is up. They will be hoping for history to repeat itself, as 15 years ago Newcastle went into the final day of the season as one of three teams still vying for a Champions League spot, and a 4-0 victory saw them climb above, by coincidence, Arsenal to clinch 4th place on goal difference.
Newcastle are 7/2 to finish inside the top 4 and 1/6 to finish outside of it

Thompson’s Top Tip

3 bets on the Champs League positions
Spurs top 4 finish 1/10 with a £10 stake
Newcastle top 4 finish 7/2 with a £10 stake
Arsenal to finish outside the top 4 9/1 with a £10 stake

Potential return £156 (£126 profit)

There were 32 goals on the final day of the season last year. By then the title and all European places had already been decided, with two relegation places the main point of interest. With so much more on offer this time around, 34 or more is priced at 13/8, might be worth a look. A £10 stake returns £26
