Moyes judgement should wait... For now

Just when it looked like the Manchester United ship had stabilised amidst the winds of transition, two losses on the bounce have thrown David Moyes under the monster truck of scrutiny.

I know. Those are ridiculously over the top explanations to describe the biggest football story of the weekend. But equally, so are the criticisms that are being labelled at the new Manchester United manager after two losses on the bounce to in-form Everton and Newcastle sides.

It isn't a major secret that things could have gone a little bit better this season so far at Old Trafford. The only major arrival to come in during the Summer was Marouane Fellaini, who hasn't exactly set the place alight so far, while a number of draws and losses have left the Champions in ninth place. They are seven points off the Champions League pace, while hopes of the title should have been given up about a month ago.

This was always going to be a season of change for United. It is obvious that Sir Alex Ferguson did extremely well to win the league last season with as weak a squad as he ever had to deal with in his time as Old Trafford. The fact that Moyes inherited the squad has no doubt hampered his attempts to fit in, while pairing him with an inexperienced vice-chairman in Ed Woodward did nothing to enhance the list of incoming players in the summer transfer window.

What am I trying to say with this? Well it must be obvious that it isn't fair to judge Moyes given he hasn't had the easiest of starts to his Manchester United career. The transition could have been made a lot easier for him, especially by the outgoing Ferguson and by the people running the business side of things in Manchester.

Moyes was manager of an Everton side that were very hard to beat for over a decade, and when he has the chance to get his own players in during January (or at the end of the season), it should mean he can start to build the Manchester United side in his own image. After forming such good teams on a shoestring budget at Everton, the relative largesse of the budget at Old Trafford will give the Scot a great chance to start having a crack at the title with a team of his own.

If he fails after that, then let the judging start. But for now, with an inherited, mediocre team and a board that haven't been at all helpful given it is his first season in charge, Moyes should be forgiven for the start he has made.

Failure to get into the Champions League however, and even this writer can safely say that all bets will be off.
