Star (manager) Wars Episode VI: The Return of the Jose

I want you to imagine an empty boardroom. A fancy glass table, lots of seats – a bit like the one in Batman or The Apprentice. At the end of the table sit two men, one drinking vodka with a couple of ice cubes whilst the other sips a diet coke. The man drinking the coke reaches over and touches the other mans hand resting on the table and with a small but knowing smile asks:

‘Do you want me back?’

A single tear rolls down his face as he sets his vodka back down on the table and nods. I’m 99.9% sure that this is how the meeting between Roman Abramovic and Jose Mourinho went when it was decided that the patron saint of Stamford Bridge would be returning to manage Chelsea once more.

Six years have passed since the breakdown of the relationship between Mourinho and Abramovic. However following spells at Inter Milan and Real Madrid, the Portuguese insists he has matured and presumably doesn’t mind that his ex has been slutting around with all the other hot names in the managerial market since their breakup.

Jose has already said that Torres and unbelievably – Juan Mata, are up for sale, it was never going to be long before Mourinho stirred everything up. He has moved for Zenit’s super-speedy battering ram known by his nickname ‘Hulk’, a direct and strong player. It seems that Jose is going to look to build a physically formidable team like the one he had before, but it’s almost impossible to say that with any sort of conviction until Jose’s supermarket sweep has finished and the new season has started.

What is certain however is that with Mourinho back behind the wheel and a placated Abramovic handing him a blank chequeChelseahave got to be looking a great bet for the title next season. If you have a bash on them now they’re at 5/2 with BetVictor, which is definitely worth jumping on before it falls after they get their new signings in.

Even if they don’t win the league, I’m just pleased that we’ll be getting some entertaining press conferences again, and I personally can’t wait to see him clash with Ian Holloway (the west country’s own Mourinho).
