Super Sunday: Liverpool vs Chelsea

At the start of the season when I was writing my Premier League predictions, I had a small, tiny, insignificant feeling that Liverpool could challenge for the title. But common sense prevailed (so I thought), and I think I eventually had them down for fifth. I couldn't be more delighted to be more wrong. Liverpool's title challenge has been a breath of fresh air in the Premier League, and with the core of English talent that has got them to this position, the message to the bigwigs upstairs couldn't be clearer: an English-player quota wouldn't mean a dilution of entertainment.

Anyway, if Liverpool beat Chelsea, it would mean they would only require three more points from their final two games (Crystal Palace and Newcastle) to be mathematically sure of the title. I for one, hope they do it. But do I believe they can?

Kop a load of this!

I wrote them off at the start of the season. I'm prepared to stake a claim for them now: I think Liverpool will beat Chelsea. The Reds are 8/11 favourites for the win with Paddy Power, while Chelsea are out at a whopping 9/2 with Betfred (probably due to Mourinho's ridiculous quote about having to 'rest' players for the game) The draw is 16/5 with Bet365.

As we saw in midweek when Chelsea played Atletico Madrid, the Blues are hard to break down. That's why I think a 1-0 Liverpool win at 8/1 with Unibet makes a lot of sense. If you fancy the margin, but not the scoreline, the Liverpool win by one goal is 3/1 with BetVictor.

A game of few goals?

It's tempting to say Brendan Rodgers will stick to his attacking principles against Chelsea, but the Northern Irishman knows Mourinho well and may be tempted to play more pragmatically on Sunday.

For that reason, it's tempting to surmise there might be few goals in this one. Under 2.5 goals is 5/4 with Ladbrokes, and for those who really like an outrageous flutter, under 1.5 goals is 4/1 with Boylesports.

Both Teams to Score is an interesting bet for this one as well. At least one clean sheet sounds like a good bet, and you can get a very generous 8/5 on not Both Teams to Score with Stan James.

Who will be the main man?

It's so hard picking a goalscorer for Liverpool as their goals can come from all over the park. Luis Suarez First Goalscorer at 7/2 with Spreadex looks like a decent shout (as per), as does young dynamo Raheem Sterling First Goalscorer at 10/1 with Ladbrokes.

But it's Daniel Sturridge for First Goalscorer we really like the look of. The England striker has declared himself fit for the game and should feature in such an important match-up. Playing against old club Chelsea will surely fire him up as well. Sturridge is 5/1 with William Hill to open the scoring on Sunday.

Phew. Here's hoping it's a good one!
