Honeysuckle: The Champion Hurdle, Tuesday 15th March
Bankers are often defined by the quality of the opposition against the market leader. This year’s renewal of The Champion Hurdle reflects a relatively weak field up against the mighty Honeysuckle (1/2 William Hill) who is looking to retain her title.
Appreciate It (4/1 bet365, William Hill, Betfred, Boylesports) and the highly progressive Teahupoo (10/1 Betfred) will offer some resistance but should be tapped for speed by the De Bromhead trained mare on the turn for home.
Teahupoo could be anything as proved by his eye-catching latest win at Gowran Park for trainer Gordon Elliott and is certainly on the upgrade but lacks the experience for this kind of contest.
Galopin Des Champs: The Brown Advisory Novices Chase, Wednesday 16th March
The Willie Mullins novice chaser conveyor belt is a slick machine, and its latest product could be the best of them all. Galopin Des Champs’s enthralling debut performance over Christmas was a 22 lengths demolition which was rated higher than first runs produced by Altior, Bob Olinger and Sprinter Sacre.
He’s got a Grade One under his belt having taken the listed novice’s event impressively at the recent Leopardstown meeting and knows his way round Cheltenham having won the Martin Pipe Conditional handicap last Festival.
There is plenty of noise from the other side of The Irish Sea with the improving Paul Nicholls trained Bravemansgame (5/2 bet365, Bet Victor).
However, the latter doesn’t seem to relish the Cheltenham hill too much and is up against a horse in Galopin who probably doesn’t understand the concept of coming off the bridle. 10/11 best with bet365.
Bob Olinger, The Turner Novices’ Chase, Thursday 17th March
Although he hasn’t overly impressed in his two runs over fences this season, we will see a totally different horse at Cheltenham in the Turner’s Chase. He has been primed for this all season and clearly loves the Cheltenham track where he excelled to win last year’s Ballymore Novices Hurdle by an impressive 7 lengths.
L’Homme Presse (4/1 bet365, William Hill, Bet Victor) trained by Venetia Williams is possibly a danger but will need to step up again and Galopin Des Champs is not a clad iron certainty for the Brown Advisory but would probably want to avoid a clash with Bob Olinger in this one.
10/11 best with Bet Victor, Betfred, Boylesports.
Allaho, The Ryanair Chase, Thursday 17th March
The Ryanair Chase this year is the racing equivalent of Clapham Junction train station such is the destination uncertainty of the key entries in this event. With the exception of Allaho, EIGHT out of the first nine in the betting are highly unlikely to participate.
Difficult to see entries such as Energumene and Chacun Pour Soi turning up such is the allure of this year’s Champion Chase and neither of them have been tested over 2 miles 4. The same can be said of A Plus Tard, Conflated and Tornado Flyer who are all surely headed for The Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Fakir Doudairies and Shan Blue look good for places at best which means Allaho should have little difficulty in retaining his title in what could be a very weak renewal of the Thursday championship race.
