Gold Cup Day is finally with us!!

The pinnacle of the week, the Blue Riband of jump racing. There’s been some great races over this week, but nothing really comes close to The Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup: 3 miles 2 furlongs, 22 fences and that perilous uphill finish that has so many times seen the careers of some great hopes diminish.

thecheltenhamgoldcup_bestbets.jpg

This year looks like a fascinating renewal with two previous winners, Minella Indo and Al Boum Photo taking on last year’s runner up A Plus Tard plus the new kid on the block, Galvin, also in the mix.

It's set to be a fantastic day of racing! We will provide you with details of the televised ITV racing schedule and anything you might need to know if you are heading for the track!

Otherwise switch on the TV and enjoy! We will assess the five TV races and point you in the right direction for the best odds and offers from our partner firms.

Races Preview

1:30 CHELTENHAM JCB Triumph Hurdle

The juvenile Grade 1 championship race is dominated by the Irish as the Ricci owner team will be hoping their Mullins trained favourite Vauban will change their fortunes this week. Pied Piper has been well back ante post but has been easy to back in recent days and represents good value now at 7/2 with Boylesports.

2:10 CHELTENHAM McCoy Contractors County Handicap Hurdle

Massively competitive handicap hurdle. We fancy the Skeltons to get a deserved winner on West Cork at 9/1 with William Hill. I Like To Move It trained by Nigel Twiston Davies has had a great season and looks great each way value with Bet365 and Betfred at 12/1 offering 7 places!

2:50 CHELTENHAM Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle

Big field for the Albert Bartlett and very competitive looking. Ginto and the enormously built Hillcrest lead the market. We think The Nice Guy trained by Willie Mullins may have more in the tank to offer and is our selection at 10/1 with Bet365 and Betfred paying 5 places.

3:30 CHELTENHAM THE BOODLES CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP

The renewal of the pinnacle race of the week looks to be an Irish dominated affair as Minella Indo looks to retain her title against a revenge seeking A Plus Tard and new kid on the block but talented Galvin. Al Boum Photo is back for more and Chantry House, Protektorat and Tornado Flyer all have chances if up to their best.

Minella Indo

Last year’s winner hasn’t quite fired this season included an incomplete run in The King George along with defeats to Conflated and Frodon.

minellaindo_cheltenhamgoldcup.jpg
However, he revels at this trip and will go close if back to his best. 5/1 best with William Hill and Betfred.

A Plus Tard

Last year’s runner up put in a sensational performance to win The Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock last November but arguably didn’t beat much that day.

aplustard_cheltenhamgoldcup.jpg
Should have won The Savills Chase at Leopardstown but was collared by an almost possessed surge to the line from Galvin. Lingering doubts about his ability to stay the 3m 2f of the Gold Cup trip remains 7/2 best with Bet365 and Boylesports.

Galvin

Since winning the National Hunt Chase at The Festival last year, this Gordon Elliott has developed into one of the best and most determined stayers around.

galvin_cheltenhamgoldcup.jpg
He has everything a Gold Cup winner needs: stamina, jumps well but most important, he’s a proper street fighter when it comes to a fight to the line.

Whoever beats him today will need to bring their A game. Our choice for this year’s Gold Cup. 7/2 best with Betfred and Boylesports.

4:10 CHELTENHAM St. James's Place Festival Challenge Cup Open Hunters' Chase

The Open Hunters chase is usually when I reach for the kettle after the excitement of The Gold Cup! Regular entrant Billaway leads the market for the Mullins team. Bob and Co trained by Paul Nicholls, who has a strong record in this race, is our choice at 13/2 with Bet365.
