Five for Value in The Grand National

This year’s market leaders in the Crabbies Grand National are worthy favourites. Many Clouds (8/1 Bet 365)  attempts to emulate Red Rum by winning the race for a straight second time and he’s got a great chance if given a clear run similar to last year.  The Last Samurai (10/1, Bet 365, SkyBet, Betfred) has not put a foot wrong all season and Silviniaco Conti (12/1 Betfred, Ladbrokes or 11/1 Bet Victor with places 1-6) is the class horse of the race, being a dual King George winner. However, value is not on the menu with these and I’ve taken a look down the list to see which is the best of the big priced fancies...

Triolo D’Alene

Nicky Henderson has not exactly had a memorable love affair with The Grand National having failed to register a win in his illustrious career as a trainer. Nonetheless, Triolo D’Alene offers an excellent opportunity to set the record straight and with one Hennessey win and a victory over the same Aintree fences under his belt, he represents outstanding value at 40/1 with Bet Victor and Sporting Bet. He also prefers livelier ground and with the going meandering between good-good/soft, there should be no complaints with the ground on Saturday.

Rocky Creek

It’s almost impossible to predict what kind of race this Paul Nicholls 10 year old will produce each time. Three seasons ago, he was primed as a Grand National horse by the Ditcheat team but has failed to live up to potential in nearly all departments. Having said that, he’s produced a few isolated pockets of decent form including a Hennessey second in 2013 and he produced an admirable 5th in the Grand National in 2014. He’s slipping down the handicap but at 66/1 with Bet Victor (including 6 places) he’s difficult to ignore.  If he can get a decent position early on in the race and jump well, which he normally does, a decent value each-way proposition is on the cards.

Soll

This David Pipe trained 11 year old seems to enjoy the Aintree fences having completed the course and distance three times. The only problem is that he’s never looked like troubling the leaders at the business end of the race. However, he ran a creditable 3 and half-length 4th in the Becher Chase last December, his best performance to date on the Aintree course.  With a Grand National bet, it’s always comforting to back a horse that is clearly confident with the Aintree fences. At 50/1 with Bet 365, Bet Victor, Paddy Power and Betfred, he might be worth chancing to improve for a decent place return.

Hadrian’s Approach

This former Bet 365 Gold Cup Winner has had a troubled last two seasons and has been a difficult horse to train for Nicky Henderson. Nonetheless, his return after a year out produced a creditable 7th in a decent Kempton handicap in February and he will improve for that run. He’s extremely well handicapped and could produce a value run for each way backers at 66/1 with BetFred, Coral and William Hill.

Buywise

Buywise would not have been considered as a Grand National horse before his last outing. He certainly proved his stamina credentials with a great third in the Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster in January this year. He’s well handicapped, consistent and is an economical jumper: very much the type of horse you’d want in this type of contest. Good value each way at 50/1 with BetFred and Bet 365.

Summing up...
Never a wise idea to invest too much into this race. Far too many variables to comprehend and with this is mind, a selection of two or three horses is always a good idea. A decent win bet on Silviniaco Conti or The Last Samuri coupled with a sneaky each way on one or two of these five might be a good way to enjoy this fascinating spectacle without breaking the bank. Good luck!
