The nation goes to the races! This Saturday sees Aintree hosting their flagship race of the season, The Grand National. I Am Maximus, the 2024 winner, leads the market unsurprisingly with the lethal combination of Mullins and Townend to count on.
However, this is as open as ever with plenty of class in the line up including luckless Cheltenham specialist Jagwar hoping to finally to land a big one, recent Bobbyjo Chase winner Grangeclare West and Haiti Couleurs who won this year’s Welsh National in fine style.
We check out best Grand National bets and top odds from our partner firms Bet365, William Hill, Betfred, Bet Victor and Boylesports.
Best Each Way Offers
As things stand, Betfred and Bet Victor are currently offering 6 places for each way Grand National bets.
Non Runner No Bet
All of our partner firms are offering NRNB (Non Runner No Bet) on Grand National bets.
The Leading Players
I Am Maximus
The 2024 winner will be latched onto by punters up and down the country on the basis of Willie Mullins being the trainer and Paul Townend opting for the ride.
However, it is easy to forget that he was only two and half lengths from landing consecutive Grand Nationals in last season’s renewal, losing out to stable mate Nick Rockett. It is a big ask at top weight to repeat this feat and would be the first since Red Rum, but he certainly loves this course and sure to feature at the business end.
Best odds of 7/1 with Bet365, Bet Victor, Betfred and Boylesports paying 6 places.
Jagwar
A frustrating horse to follow but with a big reputation for staying the distance. He has suffered two narrow defeats in big Cheltenham handicaps this season including a particularly good second in the Ultima, a race that has produced some good performances in this race.
He is tackling these fences for the first time, and the trip is a question mark. However, this is a good horse and he is well handicapped. Best odds of 10/1 with Bet365, Bet Victor, Betfred and Boylesports paying 6 places.
Panic Attack
The Skelton trained Paddy Power Gold Cup and Coral Gold Cup winner has clearly demonstrated a propensity to stay extended distances. Coral Gold Cup winners have a solid record in this race, and he is sure to put in a bold run despite not having tested himself over these fences and distance before. Best odds of 9/1 with Boylesports paying 6 places.
Grangeclare West
This Willie Mullins trained ten-year-old comes into this after a splendid win in the Grade 3 Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse, beating Gerri Colombe by five lengths.
However, he is carrying enough weight and Paul Townend has opted alternatively for I Am Maximus. Good each way chance at 9/1 with Bet365, Bet Victor, Betfred and Boylesports paying 6 places.
Iroko
A class act who finished fourth behind Nick Rockett in last year’s renewal. He simply did not fire in the Ultima at The Cheltenham Festival and he reportedly scoped dirty after the race so this is a slight concern.
Another decent each way chance if all is well at 12/1 best with Bet365, Bet Victor, Betfred and Boylesports paying 6 places.
Johnnywho
Having won The Ultima at The Cheltenham Festival beating Jagwar by half a length after wind surgery, this Jonjo O’Neill trained nine year old has an excellent chance to build on that excellent win. He is well handicapped and sure to go well. Best odds of 14/1 with Bet365 paying 6 places.
Haiti Couleurs
This extended distance specialist has intriguingly suffered when exposed to top class company with flops in the Betfair Chase and The Cheltenham Gold Cup.
However, he is back to familiar territory and if is able to reproduce his Irish and Welsh National winning form, he could run them all ragged. He is tackling these fences for the first time but his staying credentials at this level are undoubted and he looks well handicapped.
Our choice to land a first Grand National for trainer Rebecca Curtis. Best odds of 14/1 with Bet365, Bet Victor and Betfred paying 6 places.
Summary
Plenty in with a shout with a formidable JP McManus owned line up and plenty of classy stayers at the head of the market. However, despite struggling in Grade One events, Haiti Couleurs has shown great versatility having won at extended distances at three different tracks.
SELECTION:
HAITI COULEURS EACH WAY 14/1 with Bet365, Bet Victor and Betfred paying 6 places.
